Why Start a Blog?

For the first post in this new blog about blogging, I wanted to cover some of the reasons why people blog in the first place.

If you are reading this, and you aren’t a member of my immediate family (lol), chances are you are either thinking about starting a blog or you simply want to know why the heck people do it. Hopefully this article addresses both concerns. Please see below my top compelling reasons why people blog. Also see how I got started blogging and how that relates to the purpose of this site.

1. Work Towards Becoming a Writer

If you have an interest in becoming a writer, creating a blog is an excellent way to get started in the field. By starting your own blog, you don’t have to wait to get hired as a writer. You don’t have to look for a publisher. With your own blog, you can immediately begin writing and engaging your target audience. Over time, you can develop your writing skills and showcase your blog’s content to obtain paid writing gigs.

2. Marketing and Promotion

A blog is a great way to market your skills and experience. You can use your website to create an online resume or portfolio. You can write articles that demonstrate your expertise. For example, if you are a realtor, you might want to write articles on inexpensive ways to increase a home’s curb appeal. If visitors of your site like your content, this may lead them to become your clients.

Blogging is a great way to promote a business. Own a catering company? A food blog could possibly connect you with potential clients and business partners. Operate a pet sitting service? Starting a blog about pet training tips could land you some new customers. By creating content related to your business, you create more ways for potential customers to find you.

3. Share and Expand your Expertise

Know a lot about a particular subject or field of study? Share your information with the world by writing about the topic on your blog. Overtime, you may become known as an expert in your field. This can lead to opportunities for networking, employment, or partnerships.YOu may even expand your knowledge as you interface with others in your field.

4. Make Money

The most awesome reason to start a blog? A blog can lead to an additional source of income.

If your blog attracts enough visitors, you can monetize the site by displaying ads or by displaying links to products or other offers. If you have products or services for sale, you can sell them through your blog. If your site becomes really popular, you can make enough money to blog full time!

Why Do I Blog?

In the late 90’s I worked for a couple of dot com companies as a web developer and programmer. In the early 2000’s, I leveraged my dot com experience to begin creating web sites for colleagues, family, and friends. As I gained more and more experience in creating web sites, I decided to create sites of my own.

At first, I blogged just for the fun of it. Today, 100% of my income comes from creating websites for myself and others, and by helping clients with internet marketing and social media. I really enjoy working for myself and encourage everyone I know to do the same. One of the reasons I created this site was to share all of the knowledge and experience I have developed over the years.
